Shake it up baby

I'm leading off with a shake recipe that is pretty well balanced. Why am I doing this? Because when folks are recovering from surgery or going through radiation therapy, these shakes may be the only thing they can eat. I used Fitday.com for the nutrition breakdown. I encourage you to use the Fitday site - free nutrition analysis!

High proportion of protein shake:
8 oz pasteurized egg white (in the carton, not the pasteurized eggs themselves)
2 bananas
1 scoop of "Vanilla Whey Factors" (exact brand later)
8 oz Ensure Plus liquid nutrition
2 packets of Carnation instant breakfast, whichever flavor you want
1/4 cup of dry oatmeal, blended or food processed into a powder before you get started
1 oz dry nonfat milk
1 cup plain lowfat yogurt
1 Tablespoon peanut butter

Calories: 1,449
Fat: 17% 29 grams
Protein 28% 99.6 grams
Carbohydrate 54% 205.5 grams

I was going for these recommended guidelines from my nursing nutrition book:

Fat can be up to 30% of calories
Protein 10% - 35% of calories
Carbohydrate 45% - 65% of calories

I hope this is useful to any of you who need this. The other shake of the day can be the ice cream based one.

If you are losing weight during treatment, they say don't even worry about the proportions. Just add some calories, and these can be more from fat than you may be accustomed to. Add cream cheese and butter and cream to foods.

To other shakes, made with ice cream and half and half and forget the proportions, I have added peanut butter, nutella, sour cream, and what is really calorically dense is cream of coconut. Many calories per ounce and that and the peanut butter really helps cut the taste of Ensure.

A classmate reports that the Dairy Queen Blizzard is also an excellent way to get calories in!
